An Introduction to
The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain

Our Club’s History

As with other clubs, the Rotary Club of Stone Mountain is autonomous while remaining part of District 6900 and Rotary International. There are two types of membership in a Rotary Club, active and honorary. Membership is by invitation and not application. The proposal of a new member by a member is validation that the individual being proposed is of the highest character. From the very founding our organization was based on the classification principle. That is, membership in based on one’s profession or vocation. Eligibility is found in the Manual of Procedure. Today, classifications are limited to 5 of each in a club of less than 50 or 10% on clubs of over 50. It bears repeating because of it’s significance, Rotary membership is by invitation not application.

The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain was chartered on May 12, 1965 as the Rotary Club of East DeKalb. The name East DeKalb was changed to Stone Mountain on July 21, 1981. The first officers of the club were President Frank Merritt, Vice President Ed Friese, Secretary-Treasurer Tom Tidwell and Sergeant at Arms, Joe Lorenz. The first directors were Clark Brand, George McGinnis, Blake Perry and Ed Tucker. The Charter was presented on June 18, 1965 at a meeting held at the Plantation Restaurant on Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain. At that time there were 29 members in the club. The official meeting day and time was set as Tuesday, 1215PM at the Stone Mountain Inn, Stone Mountain Park. The meeting day and time remain the same.

In accordance with our club constitution and by-laws, each December we select a President and board of directors to serve one year beginning on July 1 and terminating on June 30. The president’s term is one year, but directors are able to serve subsequent years without limitation at the pleasure of the membership and invitation by the subsequent president elects.
The names of candidates for president and board are put forth to the membership
by a nominating board as appointed by the sitting president.

Serving as a President of a Rotary Club is a special honor. Remembering that Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who perform humanitarian service, promote high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace throughout the world speaks volumes of the confidence members have in your ability to lead in the accomplishments of Rotary International, the District and Club goals and objectives when you are elected to this most high office.

Many of our members have served beyond the club level. As of this writing four of our members have been elected to serve as District Governor. Members Robert “Bob” Grant served as Governor 1985-1986: Alfred J. “Al” Lipphardt served as Governor 1999-2000: Casey J. Farmer served as Governor 2010-2011 and for the first time in the history of our District a Rotary Club has back to back Governors with Margie Kersey serving as Governor 2011-2012.
The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain is a leaders’ club.
